The Perspicacious Pioneer is the first of a three-volume trilogy of pioneering on Eyre Peninsula in the twentieth century. Arty Schinkel is a third-generation Australian born in 1900 of German Silesian ancestors who have been in South Australia since the1850’s.
He is an industrious young man denied secondary education by a very puritan Lutheran mother. Arty decides to learn a trade as a blacksmith. He loves working with metals and wants to be a metallurgist. Decides to pioneer a farm in the scrub about two hundred and fifty miles north of Port Lincoln in 1926 at the age of 21. University cost a lot of money in 1925.
He loves the freedom of the new area and the cooperation of his neighbours. Has to deal with the vagaries of the seasons and the Great Depression. He marries and raises children during the difficulties of the seasons and then WWII.
