POETRY WITH PURPOSE
Give me poetry that is music,
the soaring note, the rolling phrase
that quickly soothes the troubled heart
or sets the active mind ablaze.
Give me poetry that has power,
power to prick the swelling pride
of the self-anointed mighty
and trip them in their haughty stride.
Give me poetry with strong rhythms
that match the pulse and pace of life,
stimulating the urge to action
and freeing one from fear of strife.
Give me poetry that has meaning,
clearly argued, sharply honed,
not rambling in an abstract maze,
nor dull of edge and cliché-cloned.
Above all, give me poetry that rings
with truth and sings of passion,
and dances on the false pretences
of fools of whatever fashion.
